Abstract


The article analyzes the cultural and educational activities Ukrainian urban intellectuals aimedUkrainian farmers to adapt toRussian-speaking urban environment.Special attention is paid to the creation andoperation of the "Enlightenment", notonly in cities but also in rural areas. It was found that among the main formstheir impact on farmers in order to preserve national identity wereorganization of libraries and reading rooms, printing of Ukrainian books, pamphlets and newspapers, organizing public lectures, literary and musical evenings, stagingperformances and more. The author stresses thatthus intelligentsia triedteach farmers not passively adapt to the life of Russian cities, butbring it to the Ukrainian tradition.
