EVALUATION OF STATE AND TRENDS OF MUSEUM BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT IN LVIV

Abstract


The article deals with moderntransformational changes of museums inLviv and their influence on the tourismoffer, quantitative and qualitative assessmentof the museums in the city as animportant component of the tourismindustry. The author finds out strong andweak points in development of museumbusiness. Using benchmarking, the authordefines best practices to implement thatcould lead organizations (museums) tomore sophisticated forms. To sum up, wecan conclude that museums in Lviv occupyan important place in the museum networkof Ukraine, although their number is nottoo large. According to recent statistics,Lviv region has the 10th place in theUkrainian museum attendance rating.The advantages of Lviv museums arelow cost services; optimization of thestructure; development of inter-museumcooperation (including Ukrainian and foreignpartners). However, there aresignificant disadvantages of Lviv museums,for example: small rooms and outdatedexposure; no translation for someexposures, souvenir shops and cafes;inadequate protection of museum exhibits;current lack of information and intellectualtechnologies; deficiency of informationsigns; limited museum workers’ staff;financial and bureaucratic dependence;weak legislative management; lack of areliable accounting system and storagesfor museum collections; lack of teamworkas a museum’s syndrome. The author hasstudied the best practices for state andlocal museums by means of benchmarketto find out how to use innovation technologiesor new interactive practices. As aresult, he proposes the options for modernizingor upgrading museums. The resultsof the given research can be used to makea better feedback in the work with visitors.
