CITY HALLS AS SOCIAL AND CULTURAL HERITADE OF THE PRECARPATHIAN REGION

Abstract


The main administrative buildingsof Ivano-Frankivsk region are reviewed inthe article. According to the Europeantradition city halls in Western Ukrainehad a tower that were rising above surroundingbuildings as a symbol of civilauthority.The history of building houses of Magistrateswith a hall tower is expounded.These buildings were important for theprocess of forming urban culture of theregion. Their architectural design hadimpact on the formation of the artisticvalue of Carpathian cities’ ensemble.The attention is focused on the characteristicsof the Sniatyn City Hall buildingwhich is interesting for its three-dimensionaldesign formed in architectural environment.Its main compositional axiscompletes the perspective of the mainstreet. The analysis of the Magistratebuilding is given. It was built in several stages and forms an unique architecturaland artistic image.The main design of the Magistratebuilding’s dimensions is described. It wasformed under the influence of the Classicismtradition: the axis of the compositionthat is holding gable is technically strengthenedby architectural elements; floors ofthe building marked by the cornices havebalconies on their sides which leanagainst brackets; the cornice is crowningthe completion of the main part of theMagistrate building.It is emphasized that city halls of thePrecarpathian region are dominant in thearchitectural silhouette of cities centresand their architectural forms have radicallychanged their look according to thedevelopment of styles, changes of socialneeds and preferences.It is determined that city hall buildingsin central and combinational locations ofmarket squares are certain symbols of thecity, as well as valuable monuments ofarchitecture and urban planning, part ofUkrainian historical and cultural heritage
