Abstract

The article deals with littleknowndebates between I. Franko andM. Pavlyk about the drama «Thunderstorm» by Russian playwright O. Ostrovskyy. The state of translations in Ukrainein the late XIXth century reflected theefforts of Ukrainian literature to reachwider world art spaces, which meant thechoice of other directions. There was aneed to summarize theoretical developmentsin this field. This was done byI. Franko, who was convinced that translationshad always been a significantforce in the historical and literary process.I. Franko was both a practitionerand theorist of translations, whileM. Pavlykwas mostly involved in practicalactivities. Long years of their mutual workhad to influence the ideas about literature, social life and translation issues.I. Franko and M. Pavlyk’s views were thesame regarding the fact that translations of best examples of world literature do notthreaten the independence of Ukrainianliterature and language, moreover theycontribute to their further development.Pavlyk gives his priority to dramaticworks among his translations. They deservedspecial attention as repertoires ofGalician drama theaters were in need ofthem. However, I. Franko and M. Pavlyk’sviews, as it turned out, were not the same.Their debates about O. Ostrovskyy’s drama«Thunderstorm» show their own positions, and they should be treated as «thesearch for truth through pluralism ofopinions». We can not say who is more tobe blamed for the above fact. All this ishistory now, and it is a subject for objectivestudy without prejudices and passion.
