Abstract

The articleexamines the phenomenon of the WesternUkrainian region as a borderland for ethniccultures, identities and communities. Thethesis is based on the fact that ethnic and socialgroups differed not only at the horizontallevel in the Western Ukrainian region, but also in various forms of social differentiation- ethnic, political, professional andother differences, which did not coincide, but were relatively independent and gaverise to so-called «various heterogeneity».The research has shown that since ethnicleaders of different and equally static ethniccommunities were «parents» and «children»of ethnic origins and different identities, then, of course, they constantly refl ected onissues of their ethnicity, national mythology, history, traditions and customs, commonmentality and life challenges. On the other hand, the problem of theimpact of multiculturalism within a singlespace of several typologically distinct culturesthat interconnected in a complex relationshipon the borders of modern Ukraineis among the least studied. The more weknow about the Western Ukrainian regionas a frontier of ethnic groups and cultures, the more and more there appears analyticalintelligence, journalistic articles and refl ectionswith a claim to historicity and scholarship, then the obvious are the mistakes ofunjustifi ed assumptions, ambitious discoveries, despicable judgments and mystifi cations, since they all differ signifi cantly fromhistorical and political circumstances, andeven more so from the system of interethnicbeing, ethnic representations, and criteriaof identity of the people of the frontier.
