SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMPS FOR SCHOOL YOUTH (SCHOOL SHELTERS) IN GALICIA IN THE LATE 1930s.

Abstract


In the late 1930s,37 mountain tourist shelters for differentage groups of population were functioningin Galicia. For the needs of school youththe Ministry of Religious Affairs and PublicEducation of Poland has approved theInstruction on the maintenance and useof school shelter, aimed at developing theschool tourist-local movement. School shelterswere organized both in school premisesand in specially constructed for these purposesbuildings or establishments of touristassociations. The instruction provided forthe following caveats, tips or requirements:shelters in the premises of schools, boardingschools remained under the supervisionand care of the directorates of educationalinstitutions; shelters located in hotels andtourist centers remained under the tutelageof their leaders. Some comments are givento visitors to the shelters.At the end of the 1930s, in Galicia therewere 71 school shelters in 1836 places of lodging, of which half – in the Krakowvoivodship. There were 6938 secondaryschools and 213 high schools, where 1128,4and 46,9 thousand pupils studied. One placein the school shelter was 4 educational institutionsor 1,56 places per thousand students.Under the most favorable conditionsof the period of stay (90 groups at a schoolvacation time), the institution would have 2places in a school shelter or 140 beds per1000 pupils. In the worst case (30 groupsper vacation) – three times less. The bestsituation was in Krakow, the worst – inthe Lviv voivodeships. Indicators in othervoivodeships corresponded to the Galicianindex.
