Abstract


The developmentof foreign literature and new trendsthat emerged in the literature at the endof the 19th and early 20th centuries hada signifi cant impact on the development ofUkrainian literature. Such famous artists ofGalicia as I. Franko and M. Pavlyk showeda great interest in contemporary literarytendencies and highly appreciated thoserepresentatives of foreign art who defendedthe interests of the people.One of the main problems of Europeanliterature of that time was naturalism. Theattitude to M. Pavlyk’s and I. Franko’s naturalismwas controversial. Naturalistic art isgenetically related to realistic. Therefore, itis diffi cult to distinguish between these areasin literary works. Galician writers tried tounderstand the artistic, socio-political ideasof French naturalism, which correspondedto the contemporary tendencies of Europeanliterature. Under naturalism in literaturethe fi rst priority aspects of the social planwere considered. Social and literary reasonsexplain the great interest in the work ofE. Zola, G. Flaubert. The views of I. Frankoand M. Pavlyk on contemporary literaturewere in the process of certain changes; theevolution of their principles of evaluation ofartistic works and literary-critical perceptiontook place.Noteworthy are the interest of the Galicianartists in the problems of foreign literature,the attempt to include Ukrainianliterature in the global context.
