In thearticle, the author conducts an extensivediscussion regarding the relationship of socialidentity and borderland. The article istheoretical in nature, it consists of four partsbearing the following titles: sociologicalview of the borderland, structure-subjectivity-identity, social and cultural contexts ofidentity, and the identity of the individualand the borderland. It presents selected sociologicalconcepts of the borderland andsocial identity of the individual. The authoradvocates the conception of the borderlandas a phenomenon which invests in the areaof symbolic culture community. This understandingdirects attention to the recognitionof the social identity of the individual interms of her awareness of self, which takesplace in a variety of dimensions: ethnic, national,religious, and other characteristicsof the social position, such as gender, age oreconomic position. So constructed identityis based on the conscious ordering by theindividual of his social environment. Alongwith these cognitive processes, it also makesembedding themselves within a specifi edcategory, groups and other social collectives.The basic principle here is the similarityand belonging, which then become thecriterion of separating «we» and «them».The author emphasizes, that the socio-culturalborderline signifi cantly increases theproblem of understanding and understandingof the inhabitants. She formulates this thesis based on the results of her own research,which she carried out on the easternand western borders of Poland. She also revealsthe operation of different mechanismsof identity construction on each of the borderlandsstudied.
